Theft Management


The question is: “How should we secure our DVDs and CDs from theft?” Many smaller questions are part of this main
question:

  • Does the library have enough of a loss rate to warrant a security system?
  • Are the losses due to stealing right off the shelves or from non-return of checked-out items?
  • What types of vendor solutions are available for purchase? How effective are they? How much do they cost?
  • Should the entire media collection be secured, or just the items most likely to be stolen?
  • How much money is spent in theft losses versus how much does it cost in staff time and security measures for protection?
  • What are other libraries doing about securing media?
