The question is: “How should we secure our DVDs and CDs from theft?” Many smaller questions are part of this main
question:
- Does the library have enough of a loss rate to warrant a security system?
- Are the losses due to stealing right off the shelves or from non-return of checked-out items?
- What types of vendor solutions are available for purchase? How effective are they? How much do they cost?
- Should the entire media collection be secured, or just the items most likely to be stolen?
- How much money is spent in theft losses versus how much does it cost in staff time and security measures for protection?
- What are other libraries doing about securing media?
